5 Steps to give your home a refresh this spring

Spring is here which means everyone wants to start feeling refreshed and clean, including their home.

If you’re feeling like your home (or one or more specific rooms) need a refresh heading into the blooming months, here are 5 easy steps to make your room feel new for $0:

Step 1: Declutter

Anything that you know at first glance needs to be addressed/does not live with you permanently, then take care of it. I.e. if you have items to return, piled up mail, clothes to donate, gifts to send someone, something you hate but has been used “until you replace it” (but you seem to never have time or energy to replace it…) GET RID OF IT.

This is also the step where you should put any lingering holiday or winter-specific decor in storage.

Step 2: CLEAN!

They don’t call it spring cleaning for nothing.

This is the easiest way to give your room new life for literally zero $$$$.

Take things off shelves, give everything a good dusting or wipe down. You don’t realize how much of an impact dust and dirt have until it’s gone and your room feels fresh and new.

Step 3: Move as much as you can out of the rooM

Clear out the room except for the pieces that are ABSOLUTELY staying in that room. I.e. in my one bedroom apartment, if I refresh the living room, I would keep the couch in the room. For one, it’d be hard to move much on my own (other than some skoots). And 2, there’s no other room that my sectional sofa would fit or need to be in.

Step 4: Determine your layout

If you have floor plan options already, this is the time to break those out. If not, simply start arranging various layouts with your main pieces of furniture.

Don’t touch the small stuff yet – that’s much easier to fill in (i.e. wall hangings, side tables, styled vignettes, etc).

Play around with different options. It’s best to try it all out, especially when you’re physically in the space. With each variation, sit in any possible seats and take in the room’s layout. Make not of what you do and don’t like about each option. This will help you figure out what you most want out of your space and choose the best layout option for your home!

Step 5: Fill in with your smaller items

Once you figure out your main furniture layout, work in the small items last.

Firstly, because they are the easiest to move about when the room is mostly put together. I.e. you wouldn’t place your couch AFTER you placed your coffee table.

Secondly because with smaller pieces, there are typically more location options to place them, so you can play around with different groupings and placements until you find what you like best/the most complimentary way to create a vibe/mood in your given space.
